What's involved?

An API (or Application Programming Interface) is a software intermediary that allows two applications or systems to talk to each other.

For example, the Air Quality website uses an API behind the maps and charts on the website. When you interact with the map, it sends your location to a server. A custom API then queries the quality of the air from the closest monitoring station, translates that data into a rating (Good to Extremely poor) and displays it as a coloured indicator on a map.

Why is it important?

APIs allow different systems and applications to communicate with each other, making it easier to share data and functionality. They can be especially useful for businesses that use multiple systems and want to streamline and automate their processes.

The Digital Experience and Solutions team can build custom APIs to allow data to be surfaced on websites or web applications.
